When I first left public accounting to become Controller for The Brewer-Garrett Company I knew what I didn’t know and one of those things was insurance. The incumbent insurance agents’ primary trait was being friends with a now former owner. I needed to find the right guy. I called a few of the “big” firms in town and I also called Bob Hotaling. I wanted to give the guy a shot, having met him earlier in the year at a Christmas party; I enjoyed our conversation.

The “big” firm representatives spent an hour or so going through a checklist and each asked for a copy of the policy. None of the questions on the checklist were designed to figure out how our company was different, how our company provided unique solutions to our customers. I didn’t know insurance but I knew our business.

Bob Hotaling was the last “insurance agent” I met with in this process. We met again and again and again. He had a lot of questions. Over the course of a week we spent around 8 hours together looking at job files, we reviewed our process for job costing, we went to a couple job sites. I was busy, but I also knew this time would be well spent in determining the insurance coverages the Company needed. An added benefit was he was also competitive from a pricing standpoint.

Long story made short Hotaling & Associates was the overwhelming choice as our new Insurance Advisor. Over the years I would ocassionally go to market with our program and each time Bob and his firm would present the best program. Our company has grown significantly over those 20+ years and Hotaling & Associates has been with us every step of the way.

Competitors call asking to quote our program. They ask the name of the incumbent agent. When I tell them Hotaling & Associates they would ask if I could segregate the program “since a surety relationship is more like a bank, you don’t want to change that too often”. I politely declined. I had the same type of request when it came to our Errors & Omissions insurance. I politely declined. Auto Insurance, we have a really good carrier for Auto. No thanks. The more players that are involved mean a greater possibility of a gap in coverage. I actually had one firm tell me to call him back in the event Bob should ever die. I guess that agent wasn’t a competitor.

The bottom line is Hotaling & Associates works as a partner with his customers just as Brewer-Garrett works with our customers as partners. BG is a design-build energy solutions contractor; all we have to sell are our ideas/solutions. Similarly, our insurance partner can’t provide the level of service we need without understanding our business.
Hotaling & Associates meets with me throughout the year to hear what we are up to because we keep coming up with different solutions for our customers and this can mean different insurance risks for the company.
